Restoring Bronze Headstones - Basic Steps

  1. Remove any of the greenish corrosion with a steel wire brush. This may also remove tarnish as well.
  2. Following the lines (on the stone) from the original manufacturer, sand the high points of letters, numbers and designs. Using even and medium pressure, sand just enough to make these high points brighter. Try to blend in any nicks in the same manner.
  3. Wash using a very weak mixture of dish detergent.
  4. Rinse VERY thoroughly.
  5. Dry with cotton towels.
  6. Darken the background with dark brown or black leather dye. See recommended eBook at the end of this article for more information.
  7. Let dry.
  8. Re-sand the high points like in step 2 above.
  9. Lightly brush off any metal dust that fell.
  10. Apply a lacquer coating; use a regular spray can containing clear lacquer. Do this several times following the directions on the can.

After you have restored your bronze headstone you will want to try to keep it looking nice as long as possible. Regular washing will go a long way in keeping your headstone looking great because dirt tends to increase the deterioration process.
