An Introduction to Headstone Epitaphs
The number of words you can use for headstone epitaphs is often overestimated.
In other words, people think they can put far too many words on the headstone than they really can. See also this article
related to headstone epitaphs.
When you choose a layout for your
headstone, you must understand that after the first name, last name, dates and a design is added there is quite often very
little room left for words of endearment. A reputable headstone dealer will be able to help you with this. They will make
sure the headstone epitaph will fit in the space available. The final proof, which is generated by a draftsman, will clearly
determine what can be carved into the stone.
Lettering on a stone can not
be carved too small or the center part of the letter will break off. The standard is that the surname is carved in 2-3 inch
letters and first names are usually 1.25 inches high. Dates are commonly carved in 1 inch letters but can be larger if the
stone happens to be a fairly large one.
If there is space available after
the names, dates and designs are carved it's usually only enough for one short line. Often there is only room enough for
4-6 words. These words can be added at the bottom or top which ever fits best. See the example headstone below.
The following is a list of commonly used epitaphs. This will give you a starting
point for creating a special epitaph for your loved one.
